Lentil and Bacon Soup

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 35 minutes

Ingredients: serves 4

  • 1 onion
  • 1 celery stick
  • 1 carrot
  • 1 fresh red chilli (or add some chilli powder to your own taste)
  • 6 rashers chopped bacon
  • 1 teaspoon fennel seeds
  • 250g / 9oz dried green lentils
  • 1.5 litres / 2¾ pints chicken stock
  • Zest (skin) of half a lemon
  • Crispy bacon bits


  1. Dice the onion, celery stick, carrot and red chilli
  2. Fry in 1 tablespoon of oil until soft
  3. Add the chopped bacon and fennel seeds and fry for 4 minutes
  4. Add the lentil and chicken stock
  5. Simmer for 30 minutes
  6. Stir in the lemon zest
  7. Serve with crispy bacon bits on top
