There are lots of things to think about when you are renting a property such as signing the lease and arranging to pay the rent and council tax. But one of the most important is setting up your electricity and/or gas supply, and arranging to pay your bills. By contacting your energy suppliers you can help to avoid problems with debt, meters and accounts.

Consumer Focus
is the new consumer champion created on 1st October 2008 through the merger of energywatch, Postwatch and the National Consumer Council.
Their gas and electricity price comparison service meets the requirements of a voluntary code of practice laid down by Consumer Focus, and is:
· impartial – not biased to any supplier
· comprehensive – compares all tariffs from all suppliers
· accurate and up-to-date

Energy Best Deal Scotland
Consumer Focus Scotland launched its Energy Best Deal Scotland campaign, supported by Ofgem, in November. The campaign aims to support consumers, especially vulnerable and low income consumers, to get the best deal on their energy bills this winter. Home Heat Helpline: free help to reduce energy bills

If you're worried about your heating bills this winter then help is at hand from the Home Heat Helpline - an independent service set up as a gateway to grants, trust funds and reduced or "social" tariffs available from your energy company.
Last year the Helpline took over 50,000 calls and about half of all callers saved money on their bills through a range of help including:
- reduced or "social" tarrifs
- The Priority Service Register - providing extra services for the elderly or disabled
- Trust funds set up to help pay off energy debt
- Benefits entitlement checks to help customers maximise their income
- Referral to other schemes including government grants for central heating
