Families Go Back To School – To Live
27 August 2010
Twenty-three people are now going back to school – to live, thanks to Albyn Housing Society’s renovation of Bunoich Primary School in Fort Augustus.

The renovation, which was made possible thanks to a Scottish Government grant of almost £730,000, includes five properties for rent as well as five for sale through the LIFT scheme. LIFT is the low cost initiative for First-time Buyers, part of the Government's programme for extending affordable home ownership.

The old primary school and schoolhouse in the unrivalled Highland setting was originally built around 1880. Albyn purchased the property from the Council in 2006, with a view to providing much-needed sustainable, affordable housing for the scenic area.

Calum Macaulay, Chief Executive of Albyn Housing, said: “This development showcases how Albyn can utilise surplus Highland Council Assets to provide opportunities for affordable housing.  We have a strong commitment to the community and are pleased to welcome our new tenants into their homes.”

“Each house has been designed to stay in line with our sustainability policies including the sensitive re-use of existing buildings. We’re proud to have given this important local landmark back to the whole community to enjoy.”

Colin Armstrong Architects were recruited to design the development which Albyn insisted should remain environmentally friendly as possible.  Fairhursts and Armour and Partners were on board for the engineering and quantity surveying.

Housing and Communities Minister, Alex Neil, said:

“These new homes provide more good housing news for the Highlands. The Scottish Government is doing all we can to offer support to housing associations, such as Albyn Housing Society to deliver quality, affordable homes.

“This development in Fort Augustus has also provided a much-needed boost for the local construction industry.”

The project is the latest in a programme of conversions by Albyn, including Tulloch School in Nethybridge and the renovation of the old Glenurquhart High School in Drumnadrochit.

All rented properties at Bunoich Crescent have been allocated but there are still LIFT properties available for sale.
